Dayton Air Show

January - July 2025

During my time at the Dayton Air Show I worked on various design projects. I was in charge of creating various banners for the show grounds, tickets for the Chairman’s Club and the Vandalia Flight Fest, a logo for “Aviate Her”, security signs for the front gate, filming & editing TikToks, and creating fliers for various Air Show related events. The Air Show typically doesn’t have an in-office designer so this position allowed me to take over on a lot of projects with direct guidance from both the Executive Director and Air Show Administrator.

Banners

When you are throwing an event as large as the Air show, banners become a necessity. It’s the easiest & most prominent way to give your sponsors recognition and provide wayfinding solutions for spectators at the show. A majority of our sponsors will design and send us their own banners, but we are left with a few of our own we have to make. We introduced multiple new programs, events, and seating spaces this year, all of which needed a banner. These Included: Skyview Lounge, Aviate Her (logo also designed by me), Vandalia Flight Fest, VIP Flight Fest Sponsor: Buckeye Harley Davidson, and signage for the VIP Tent at Flight Fest.

Chairman’s Club

The Chairman’s Club is the most exclusive seating area the Air Show offers. In addition to the exclusive amenities that the membership includes, we wanted to create an experience for our members that stood out from all of our other ticket packages. Instead of receiving digital tickets, our Chairman’s Club members receive a physical packet which includes: Physical tickets that resemble boarding passes, a “trip itinerary” (which explains the schedule of events for the show), and a welcome letter to the members. Other items included in their packet that I did not design are: Map of the show grounds, VIP parking passes, a parking map, and a hand card.

Something new we introduced this year was the Vandalia Flight Fest. This event replaced the Friday night party that was held in one of the hangars on site. Moving this event to the Vandalia Rec center allowed for more attendees to take part in the event, and expand the festivities. General Admission tickets were free, which allowed everyone access into the event which included: food trucks, drink vendors, a performance by the Lt. Dan Band, a walk through parade, and meet and greets with various Air Show performers. Like we did for the Chairman’s Club members, we wanted to do something special for our VIP members, who mostly include the performers. Instead of sending them a digital VIP ticket, I designed a physical ticket that they could bring to the event and exchange the stub for their VIP wristband, allowing them access into the tent.

Aviate Her Logo

Aviate Her is a brand new program that was introduced this year. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the Friday before the show, we aren’t just setting up for the show, but also running other events such as: Aviate Her, STEM Day, SOAR, and the Vandalia Flight Fest. Aviate Her was introduced because we wanted a way for teen girls who are interested in Aviation to get involved in what we do. This program, like STEM and SOAR, takes place while the vendors are setting up/ the performers are practicing for the big show. The girls are led around the show grounds with various hands-on activities and panels with women employed within various fields in the Aviation Industry. Since this program was just introduced this year, we needed a logo.

What I knew before the design process:

  • This program is for teen girls only

  • We didn’t want the logo to seem too childish, but still evoke “fun”

  • It needed to be colorful

  • This logo would be used for both Print and Web

For the final logo I decided to use a plane’s propellers as the main element. I used flowers to replace the center of the propeller and where the stripes typically would be in order to add more character to the logo. I chose a bubbly Sans-Serif to enhance the playfulness depicted within the graphic elements. Finally, we chose a color pallet of purple, yellow, and pink, allowing the logo to feel more light and fun, without feeling too childish.
